7 Tips to Decrease Carbon Footprint In Celebration of World Environment Day

By John Carlo Caoile

The United Nations celebrates World Environment Day every 5th of June to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect the environment. From a simple tree-planting activity to advocating in your own way, here are some tips on how to decrease carbon footprint!

  1. Tree Planting

Engaging in or organizing tree-planting activities helps reduce carbon footprints and pollution by releasing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide. Additionally, plants and trees offer other benefits, such as flood protection.

2. Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle

Practicing the three Rs: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle – is an effective way to minimize carbon footprints and waste!

4. Educate and Advocate

Educating and advocating for proper mitigation, waste segregation, waste management, and water conservation is important. Informing others about these topics, starting from students and extending to communities, can drive collective action to save

In line with this, Knowledge Channel recently launched Tropang K!Likasan, a new show discussing these climate change topics, on April 18 at San Antonio Village Elementary School.

5. Use Renewable Energy and Energy-Efficient Appliances

Switching to renewable and efficient energy sources such as solar energy, wind turbines, and hydropower, can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

6. Reduce Food Waste

Minimizing food waste and the use of single-use containers, such as styrofoam and plastic utensils, can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by lowering the energy required to produce these items.

7. Walking and Using of Public Transport

Choosing public transport decreases the number of private vehicles on the roads, thereby reducing pollution and carbon emissions. Walking or cycling also offers numerous health benefits in addition to lowering individual carbon footprint.

This World Environment Day let's all remember to do our part. Initiatives to lower our carbon footprint and save the environment, no matter how big or small, are important as we reach a critical moment where climate change and its effects may become irreversible. Our individual efforts, when done collectively, can make a huge impact in celebrating and taking care of Mother Nature. Want to know more about the environment and how to preserve it?
