June 12, 2024 - Today marks the celebration of the 126th Philippine Independence Day. Since achieving its independence on June 12, 1898, the country has consistently upheld the values of community, resilience, and courage shown by its people. Honoring this day involves learning from the country's history and  promoting Filipino culture and traditions. 

Here are six facts about Philippine Independence Day that will fill you with even greater pride in being Filipino!

1. The Philippine Independence Day

During colonial times, young people were obligated to work and pay taxes to demonstrate loyalty to the Spanish monarchy. Many were deprived of the chance to pursue education, especially if they were not from wealthy families. However, the heroes fought bravely against colonizers allowing Filipinos to experience life differently today. 

This historic day happened on June 12, 1898, a day that will never be forgotten by a country who gained its sovereignty after 333 years.

2. The Philippine Flag
The Philippine Flag was first displayed after Filipinos won against the Spaniards in the Battle of Alapan on May 28, 1898, and formally presented during the independence proclamation on June 12, 1898. Each color and symbol holds significance in Filipino culture and represents the bravery in the battles for independence.

3. Respect for the Philippine Flag

The representations of colors and symbols of the flag have been explained, and it is also important to tackle how individuals can pay respect for the nation’s symbol of freedom.
