KCFI and DepEd Renew Partnership to Enhance Educational Access
By Ysabelle Marithe Villegas
On October 9, 2024, the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) and the Department of Education (DepEd) formalized the renewal of their partnership by a ceremonial signing of a new Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), reinforcing their shared commitment to closing learning gaps and making quality education more accessible. Led by KCFI President and Executive Director Rina Lopez and Education Secretary Sonny Angara, the new MOA will allow the two organizations to continue collaborating in the development of curriculum-based video lessons and other educational materials to enhance Early Childhood Development (ECD) learning and Basic Education.
These resources for pre-kindergarten to grades 1–3 students emphasize Reading and Math. They will be available through the on-air, online, and offline Knowledge Channel platforms, as well as DepEd’s online learning portal.
Additionally, the partnership includes KCFI conducting capacity-building programs to strengthen the Reading and Math instruction skills of public school teachers and administrators, in support of DepEd. As part of working closely with KCFI to implement the initiatives, DepEd will establish policy guidelines, designate a Partnership Coordinator, and join the fundraising efforts to ensure long-term sustainability. The potential for Knowledge Channel to be DepEd’s broadcast partner in TV-aided instruction, positioning the channel as a key mainstream media platform for institutional communication, shall also be explored in the renewed partnership. Their collective efforts will also lead to more professional development programs for educators and Schools Division Superintendents.
KCFI and DepEd have been successfully working together for 25 years to improve the quality of basic education in the country by producing and distributing multimedia innovative educational content aligned with the curriculum and conducting upskilling programs for educators. Studies prove that Knowledge Channel’s interventions in learning settings resulted in better cognitive, affective and behavioral outcomes, more creative engagement approaches by teachers, and higher participation and completion rates among students.
