Traversing mountains: bringing Knowledge Channel to Ifugao

Written by: Prudence Caballero

Last May 17, the Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) was able to reach more and teach more by turning over a Knowledge Channel Portable Media Library (KC PML) to each of the 40 Ifugao beneficiary schools from the municipalities of Banaue and Aguinaldo, thanks to the support and generosity of the Provincial Local Government Unit (PLGU) of Ifugao.

The KC PMLs were distributed to the schools through two separate face-to-face turnover ceremonies during the day, with the morning session dedicated to the 21 Banaue schools and the afternoon session to the 19 Aguinaldo schools. A total of 120 teachers and school heads attended the ceremonies, along with key representatives from KCFI, the local Department of Education Schools Division Office (SDO), and the Provincial Local Government of Ifugao. These were Mr. Edric Calma, Director of Operations, and Ms. Liberty Reyes, Resource Mobilization Manager, from KCFI; Mayor Joel Bungallon and Barangay Captain Flordeliza Dumulag from the Banaue LGU; Mayor Gaspar Chiligan, Vice Mayor Roberto Lim-Ang, and Sangguniang Bayan Member Sharon Dapuyen from the Aguinaldo LGU; and, Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Gloria Buya-ao, Curriculum Implementation Division Chief Dr. Marcian M. Aydinan, Public School District Supervisor (PSDS) Evangeline Dulnuan, and PSDS Elizabeth Ognayon from SDO Ifugao.

After the turnover ceremonies, the teachers and school heads also participated in the KC PML Technical Training program to learn about how to most effectively utilize the KC PML in their schools and classrooms to best support the teaching-learning process, conducted by KCFI’s own School and Community Engagement team.

Before the turnover ceremonies on May 16, KCFI paid courtesy visits to the Office of the Governor, under Ifugao Provincial Governor Jerry Dalipog, and the Office of the Mayor in Banaue. Here, KCFI met with Mayor Joel Bungallon, SDS Gloria Buya-ao, and Provincial Board Member Joseph Odan, who was instrumental in linking the Ifugao PLGU with KCFI.

In her special message to the beneficiary schools in Ifugao, KCFI’s President and Executive Director, Ms. Rina Lopez, recalled that Knowledge Channel’s history with the province began way back in 2009. As KCFI reignites this partnership through the turnover of KC PMLs, she hopes that the children of Ifugao would be more equipped to overcome the challenges brought about by learning poverty while also being able to have more fun while learning.

“Let us all work hand in hand to make learning a delight for the Filipino children, because learning is easy when it is fun. Katulad nang lagi naming sinasabi sa Knowledge Channel, ang saya matuto ng bago,” said Ms. Lopez as she concluded her message.
