59 teachers trained on teaching early reading

Knowledge Channel Foundation (KCFI), Local Government of Santa Rosa City, Department of Education (DepEd), and Metrobank Foundation bring Basa Bilang to Grade 1 Teachers of 18 Santa Rosa City public schools.
Funded by the Local Government of Santa Rosa and Metrobank Foundation, Grade 1 teachers along with their principals and DepEd heads from the Division of Santa Rosa City, Laguna gathered at the Hotel Dominique in Tagaytay City to undergo a 3-day training with reading specialist Victor A. Villanueva. A total of 8 modules were delivered covering essential topics on early reading.
According to Villanueva, the training was able to cover the necessary skills needed to help teachers teach their young learners read better. “I feel that we are able to address the teachers needs in terms of early literacy instruction. In terms of participation, they are very receptive and are able to contextualize what we have been discussing to their actual needs as teachers.”

He further added that teachers will be able to implement some of the approaches as soon as they return to their schools “I am very optimistic they will be able to implement some of the approaches we have been talking about.”
Participant Liberty Guico, Grade 1 teacher from Caingin Elementary School, affirmed that she will immediately apply what she learned and even involve her pupils’ parents. “Once I go back to our classroom, ang plano ko kasi ay i-gather ko ang mga parents ko at i-invite sila, one parent everyday, para mag-storytelling sa klase.”
Dr. Helen Ramos, Schools Division Superintendent of DepEd Santa Rosa, expressed her gratitude to KCFI and the local government of Santa Rosa City as it addressed a pressing issue for the division. “The Basa Bilang Project is a timely project for DepEd Santa Rosa because based on our evaluation of the situation in our division, many of our young learners lack the necessary reading and numeracy skills. And this is where both KCH and DepEd Santa Rosa I believe we have to do something about.”
KCFI’s Basa Bilang helps Filipino primary grade students confidently read and do math so they can become independent learners, confident problem solvers, and critical thinkers by the end of Grade 3. To fulfill this need, KCFI aims to produce 1,500 animated learning videos for Grades 1-3 in Filipino, English, and Math, based on the Department of Education’s textbooks and daily budget of work. These videos will be distributed on Knowledge Channel’s various platforms on-air, online, and offline.
