Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) and Quezon City Public Library (QCPL) signed a Memorandum of Agreement last February 14 to collaborate in developing educational video episodes for the Basa Bilang Project, a program that aims to improve the skills of K-3 children in Beginning Reading, Literacy, and Mathematics through animation videos.
Signing for KCFI were President and Executive Director Rina Lopez Bautista and Director of Operations Edric Calma, while City Librarian Emelita Villanueva and Head of Children’s Section Alistair Troy Lacsamana represented QCPL.
Through the partnership, QCPL shall provide free use of their puppets, materials, and services. “In-enter din ng Quezon City Public Library ang partnership na ito kasi gusto pa naming ma-reach hindi lang Quezon City kundi ang buong bansa. Sa tingin namin maganda na ang ginagawa ng [QCPL], marapat lamang na i-share ito at magandang ka-partner ang Knowledge Channel kasi same advocacy, hindi nalalayo. Kapag merong dalawang magandang organization na nagtulong-tulong, marami tayong maa-accomplish. (Quezon City Public Library entered this partnership because we want to reach not only Quezon City but the whole country. We think that QCPL is doing well, and it is imperative to share it with a partner that has the same advocacy, like Knowledge Channel. When two organizations collaborate, we can accomplish more),” said Mr. Lacsmana.
QCPL hopes that this undertaking will encourage more public libraries in the country to leverage their services to reach and educate Filipinos.
The MOA signing ceremony was then followed by a press conference attended by other QCPL employees.
KCFI has started shooting Grade 1 Filipino reading episodes with the Quezon City Puppets in the 1st week of February and will continue doing so for the succeeding weeks.
“We’d like to encourage the libraries and everyone else to really promote that culture of reading in various platforms [and fora] because it is very important for a child to learn how to read. Even as young as preschool they can start already to learn how to read. The job of the public libraries in Quezon City and around the country is very critical to the progress of our country,” said Rina Lopez Bautista.
