Symposium Delivers New Perspectives in Learning About Martial Law
In light of remembering the declaration of Martial Law by former President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos, Knowledge Channel held a Martial Law Symposium last September 22 at the Rockwell Business Center in Ortigas to inform and educate younger generations on this period in Philippine history.
The event featured stories and insights from former Education Undersecretary Rizalino Rivera and renowned veteran director and De La Salle professor Jose Javier Reyes. Mostly attended by young employees and professionals, the symposium focused on the first hand accounts of the speakers, a time not experienced by a majority of the audience.
Former Usec. Rizalino Rivera shared how it was like growing up under Martial Law and how his political views changed by the time he reached college. For Jose Javier Reyes (or “Direk Joey” as most would call him), he discussed Martial Law from an anthropological perspective and how different generations may perceive Martial Law.
Josh Uyheng of Ateneo de Manila University also gave the audience a walkthrough on the recently launched martiallawmuseum.ph, a virtual collection of articles, poems, photos, and other resources for teaching and learning Martial Law. Knowledge Channel’s videos could also be found on the website (Read: Martial Law Online Museum Goes Live).
This event was done in partnership with the Lopez Museum and Library, First Philippine Holdings, and sponsored by Manila Water Company Inc.
