KCFI Wins Lopez Achievement Award

The Knowledge Channel Foundation Inc. (KCFI) was selected as one of the 10 awardees at the prestigious Lopez Achievement Awards (LAA) held in  November 2016. LAA paid tribute to organizations and individuals whose works excellently reflected the core values of the Lopez group. Under the Public Responsibility category, KCFI was recognized for its pioneering multi-platform campaign on providing psychological support and wellness in disaster-stricken areas known as “Psychological First Aid” or PFA alongside its teacher service training program.

The project was done in partnership with the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc. (ALKFI) – Sagip Kapamilya, Fr. Bulatao Center and the Department of Psychology of the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) and the Department of Education Regional and Division offices in the areas where chosen beneficiary schools are located.

One component of the project is the development of a four-part video series with the following objectives: 1) to help educators in disaster stricken areas recover from trauma and 2) prepare them to address the psycho-social needs of students and even the community in similar traumatic situations.

Hosted by Atom Araullo, the videos demonstrated how teachers should respond appropriately and effectively to the psychological needs of students/survivors immediately after a catastrophe. Some of these include immediate actions like “Look, Listen, Link” and step-by-step procedures on how to “process survivors” individually and in groups.

These videos were accompanied by training activities through Knowledge Channel Foundation’s Learning Effectively through Enhanced and Evidence-based Pedagogies (LEEP) with Psychological First Aid (PFA) as theme. LEEP with PFA as overarching theme is a four-day program for teachers and school administrators to better teach with learner-centered approaches while addressing the student’s needs for psychological first aid.

LEEP-PFA was first launched in Busuanga, a remote municipality in Palawan severely hit by Typhoon Yolanda, but got very little rehabilitation support especially in terms of basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter, and PFA. It was the first multi-platform project in that area to deal with post-disaster mental health. After this, KCFI also delivered the same modules to 78 other schools in the DepEd divisions of Aklan, Antique, Roxas, Iloilo, Bukidnon, Iligan, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley, Eastern Samar, Leyte and in the city schools division of Cagayan de Oro and Ormoc.

Close to a thousand teachers and principals in Visayas and Mindanao have benefited from the videos and training of LEEP-PFA. These teachers have since then echoed the same training to their co-teachers and have conducted PFA to their students. In some areas, they have also administered PFA to parents and other community members.

This year, with the support of ALKFI – Sagip Kapamilya, KCFI will conduct LEEP-PFA to 85 more schools in Cebu, Bohol, Eastern Samar, Tacloban, Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo.
